Labor Story (a little graphic - feel free to skip ahead to the next pic):
My due date of May 23rd had come and gone...with very little change to my dilation or cervix, so plans were made to schedule an induction for the following Thursday. At about 6:30 am on Saturday morning, I felt something "pop" inside me and reluctantly rolled out of bed, made it to the bathroom in time to realize that my water broke (but not all over the bed or floor). Ryan was hoping to go to work and get some stuff done...but apparently, baby had other plans. I woke up Ryan and we got ready to head to the hospital. (Kolby was fortunate enough to get to spend time with his Kauai grandparents since they were in town).
By 9:30 am, I was admitted to Queen's (they had to make sure it really was my water that had ruptured and baby was on his way). I didn't make much progress with contractions or anything (only 2 cm still), so pitocin was started and it worked well...epidural by noon (maybe still only about 2 cm, but cervix had thinned considerably)...got to rest... The Spurs were playing at 3, so Ryan was hoping that the baby would come before then or after 6...I told him no promises since baby already disrupted his plans to go to work... 3:00 came around and still no baby...Ryan figured it was destiny for the baby to come during the game and he'd have to turn off the TV, but I assured him that the TV could be left on. Then at about 3:45, the nurse figured that I should be complete by then, but I really felt no pressure or urge to push. (She hesitated checking my cervix often because of fear of introducing germs since my water bag was broken.) Good thing she decided to check again - after a visual cue she said "Whoa. Are you sure you don't feel anything?" I felt nothing - the epidural was really working! She said I was complete, +1 which meant the baby's head was lower than the pelvis. Doc made it to the hospital by 4:15 (halftime of the Spurs game and I joked that Ryan would like the baby out by the end of halftime), started pushing at 4:23 and in two contractions, Kaysen was born - 4:26pm - with a little bit of time left to spare in halftime. Crazy...
So far, Kaysen has been a good listener. I wanted him to last in me at least through my last day of work (May 17)...he also came into the world without interrupting Dad's Spurs game. Aside from those "coincidences," Kaysen has been a content baby. He loves to eat and sleep - which is opposite from what we went through with baby #1...
Speaking of baby #1, Kolby totally adores his little brother. When they first met in the hospital, Kolby hugged and kissed Kaysen, then asked where his toes were so he could count them. Now that we're all home, Kolby is making sure he is quiet while baby is sleeping. If baby is crying, he'll immediately put down what he's doing and run over to check and see why baby is crying - often trying to soothe Kaysen with a kiss or head rub. He has not been jealous at all, possibly because his Dad is making sure to spend lots of time with him. Ryan is a wonderful Dad and I hope the boys grow up to be just like him.
